Birth Control And Pregnancy: Will It Affect The Baby?

Most women don’t always want to get pregnant when they are sexually active. For various reasons just because we are having intercourse doesn’t mean we are ready or willing to have a baby. There are a huge variety of birth control methods that can help prevent us getting pregnant, each with varying success rates.

Some of the most common forms of birth control are hormonal, or the pill (also the patch and ring) and barrier methods such as condoms, sponges, caps and diaphragms. All of these have quite a good success rate when used properly, but not one of them is one hundred percent guaranteed to keep you from getting pregnant.

Birth control and pregnancy is something that women need to know about when they are in the right stage of their life. Taking or using any form of birth control does not absolutely mean that you will not become pregnant, especially if you do not use the birth control exactly as directed.

Birth control pills are among the most effective methods of contraception. It is said they are ninety-nine percent successful. Again, this is only if the hormones are taken as prescribed. If not, the effectiveness rate drops significantly. If you don’t follow the instructions you can become pregnant birth control or no birth control.

If you are aware of the fact that it is possible to become pregnant even while taking the pill or wearing the patch, hopefully you realize that you could be that one in one hundred women that still get pregnant. If this happens, you want to do all you can to protect your unexpected baby.

Usually while taking the pill, if you become pregnant you find out in the same way you would otherwise. First of all you miss your period. This is very uncommon if you are on the pill, so you should probably take a pregnancy test right away. If it is positive, then it looks like you are that lucky one in a hundred.

Now you may be worried that you have still been taking the pill while you were pregnant because you didn’t know about it. What might those hormones have done to your baby? The answer is: don’t worry! Just stop taking the pill right away. There is no evidence that taking birth control and pregnancy is a cause for birth defects or complications. Simply stop taking the pills when you find out and then see your doctor.

Understanding how birth control works is important, and especially knowing that almost no method is completely safe. If you should become pregnant while on the pill don’t keep taking the pill and consult your physician for what to do next.
