Birth Control Depression: You Don’t Have To Endure It

Birth control pills are famous for their high level of effectiveness and ease of use. Unfortunately they are also notorious for causing a number of negative side effects, some of which can make life very unpleasant for a woman.

Some side effects of hormonal birth control include symptoms such as headache, breast tenderness, nausea and mood swings. These are all annoying, but it is the mood swings that might potentially create other problems. Birth control depression is something that can occur, usually starting out as or triggered by mood swings.

Introducing new hormones into your body can really create havoc on your system. Just look at what pregnancy does to you. You are flooded with many new hormones and it causes most women to feel ill. It is the same with birth control pills. Many of the side effects are also the same as symptoms experience during early pregnancy!

Mood swings is one of the most commonly mentioned symptoms of pregnancy and one that every woman (and her partner!) struggles with. But knowing that you are going to have a baby can make that all worthwhile. However, if you are actually actively trying to prevent pregnancy and still experiencing those mood swings it can be harder to feel okay about.

It does sometimes happen that the mood swings experienced while taking hormonal contraception can trigger depression, in the same way the mood swings of pregnancy or hormone changes of the post partum period can trigger depression. With birth control, though this is not very common.

In order for birth control depression to hit, it is usually necessary that you have a history of depression. It is more likely to be a return of a condition you have already had than a new one starting up. This should provide some relief to those who have not had problems with depression, but it can be worrisome for those who have.

When you take a birth control pill, carefully monitor your side effects. You may not have any at all. However, you may experience some, so take note of what exactly you are going through. Mood swings may be normal, but if they become severe or turn to feelings of depression, you will definitely want to see your doctor. He may be able to prescribe a different formula that might work better for you or recommend a different form of birth control altogether.

Birth control depression is not likely to occur in women without a previous history or a family history of depression. Still it can happen, but you must keep in mind that it is not something you need to endure. It is always important to treat depression, and in the case of birth control depression you can simply stop taking the pill and get on a better birth control method that will allow you to live your life with optimism.
