Birth Control Effectiveness: It’s Largely Up To You (effectiveness Of Birth Control)
Most of the time when people use birth control it is not because they sort of don’t want to get pregnant. It usually means they absolutely do not want to get pregnant. For this reason, pinning all your hopes on any one method of birth control can be a little frightening, knowing that there is a chance it will not work.
Each form of birth control has a different rate of success. Complete abstinence is the only one hundred percent effective method, but even this one sometimes goes wrong when someone makes a mistake. All other forms are admittedly not one hundred percent effective.
One thing that is important to remember is that birth control is most effective when used exactly as recommended. As a matter of fact, it is only as effective as stated when you DO use it exactly as prescribed. Therefore the level of birth control effectiveness is largely up to you!
Most types of birth control have as high as a ninety nine percent effective rate. This is very high, but the number could actually be set closer to ninety five percent for methods that require certain behaviors by the parties involved. There is simply always room for human error.
When taking birth control pills or other hormonal methods, such as the patch or ring, you have to be sure you take them every day (or change them as directed). Skipping days does not keep your body steadily preventing ovulation, and you may ovulate, and thus become pregnant because you missed a day or more of your pills.
When using the barrier method, which includes condoms, sponges, diaphragms and cervical caps, they must be positioned and worn correctly. Also, they should be inspected for any tears or other faults that may cause leakage and thus decrease or eliminate their ability to prevent pregnancy thus negating the effectiveness of birth control.
There are other methods that have a higher birth control effectiveness rate. These are usually those that do not require regular maintenance or that are permanent fixes. For example, the two types of sterilization, tubal ligation for women and vasectomy for men are highly effective, although they are also mostly permanent.
If you are like most people and really depend upon your birth control to keep you from getting pregnant it is important for you to remember your own role in making that happen. Following directions exactly is the first step in effective birth control. Also, recognizing that there is never a guarantee you will not become pregnant, it is recommended that you use two forms of contraception at the same time, thereby decreasing your chances even more.
