Birth Control Hair Loss

Taking control of whether or not you become pregnant is easy in our days. There are many types of birth control available on the market and everyone has access to them. They are easier than ever to use and extremely effective. Because there are so many to choose from it is important to weigh the pros and cons of the types you are considering using.

One of the most commonly selected forms of birth control is oral contraception. This is because in most cases it is a simple solution that does not interfere with your lifestyle, you just have to remember to take your pill every single day. Or you can also get the same type of protection by wearing a patch or ring.

The pill works by giving the body certain hormones. These cause the woman to stop ovulating. This means that no egg is released and therefore fertilization cannot occur. The pills use different types of hormones in varying levels. Different people respond differently to different pills so your doctor should choose which type will be best for you.

Because of the hormonal changes that take place when you are on the pill, many people experience certain side effects. The most common of these include headaches, nausea, breast tenderness and mood swings. However, birth control hair loss and other more serious complications have been reported from time to time.

So what causes birth control hair loss? Well, it has to do with the hormones. When certain androgens are combined with low levels of estrogen, which are not able to fully counteract it, it can possibly lead some women to experience hair growth. This may be in the form of unwanted hair, but it affects all hair.

The problem with birth control hair loss comes a bit later. In the regular cycle of hair the hair falls out eventually. Part of the problem with people experiencing hair loss after taking birth control pills may be due to the hair which was thickened, finally falling out in its cycle.

Another cause of birth control related hair loss might be when a certain birth control pill is discontinued. Again, the hormone changes occur and it takes the body a little while to get used to it. Sometimes this causes some hair loss. If you are taking birth control pills and experience hair loss, it is important to see your physician.

Your doctor will be able to help you with any unwanted side effects you may be experiencing with your birth control pills. You can be prescribed a different formula or you may choose to switch to an entirely different method of birth control so you do not have to worry about the side effects of hormonal contraception.
