Modern Birth Control Methods

We all have our own ideas about having a family. Some want a large family with many kids to fill their homes and lives. Others want a few children when they are a little older. Still others don’t plan to have children at all and prefer to focus on their career or other life interests instead. Whatever a person or couple’s plans, family planning is something we all have to think of.

Of course, for most of us this means considering birth control methods that will help us to achieve our desired goals in regards to the number of children we want to have and the time at which we want to have them. Having the option to improve or reduce your chances of becoming pregnant with the help of birth control makes family planning much easier than otherwise.

There are many different birth control methods people use. Some are more scientific and others are natural and have been used throughout history. For many centuries past certain preparations have been made to be taken orally or to be used during coitus, with varying success rates. Today’s most common birth control options are far more effective than methods in the past.

As a matter of fact, many birth control methods have proven to be almost completely effective. An IUD or intrauterine device will prevent pregnancy with great accuracy. One is inserted into the uterus by a doctor and remains in place, effective in preventing pregnancy and implantation for up to ten years!

Hormonal methods of contraception give the woman hormones that cause her to not ovulate, or release an egg. This obviously prevents pregnancy, but the hormones must be taken very regularly, every day as prescribed. They are commonly in pill form but can also be administered by use of a patch that is worn for a week releasing the hormones to be absorbed through the skin.

Barrier methods actively prevent sperm from entering the female reproductive tract. Such things as condoms worn by men, diaphragms, worn by women, as well as the sponge all are in place to prevent the possible movement of semen toward an existing egg.

Behavioral methods are more natural methods such as coitus interruptus, or removal before ejaculation. This is often used in combination with the rhythm method, which is watching the calendar and avoiding intercourse on the two weeks after the period, with the infertile period being the week before and during the period.

Whatever your type of family planning, birth control options are available that will make it easier for you to prepare and plan for your pregnancy while still enjoying the important physical element of your relationship with your partner. All of the above mentioned methods can be effective, but some more than others. Talk to your doctor about the method that is best for you.
