The Birth Control Patch: The Simplest Contraceptive Solution

For women there is no question that “the pill” is the most commonly used form of birth control. Really, it is like a magic medication that prevents you from getting pregnant. Now that is truly powerful. This hormonal method of birth control is one that has an extremely high success rate when used properly, but this is where the problem lies.

The original “pill” has come a long way and there are many different brands and different levels of hormones used in the pills. Still, there is one thing common to every type: it absolutely must be taken consistently in order to be effective. This means taking the correct pill every day of the week, at about the same time every day. Easy, huh?

Well, not always. For some people it is just too hard to take the pill as prescribed. Especially if your schedule differs every day it can be hard to remember and incorporate taking the pill into your everyday activities. Many women do forget, and even skipping a few days can mess up your cycle and leave your vulnerable to getting pregnant.

Enter the birth control patch. This little invention provides all the same contraceptive power of the pill without the need to remember to take your pill every day. Instead, the hormones are absorbed at the necessary rate through your skin without you even thinking about it!

Birth control patches are just what they sound like. You have probably heard of nicotine patches that release nicotine into the body while a smoker tries to get used to not physically smoking? The birth control patch works in the same way, except that if you’re a smoker, you’ll probably still want to smoke.

The patch is applied to the skin on the first day of the woman’s menstrual cycle. Most women wear it on their upper arm, stomach, thigh or behind. Once applied, it gradually releases the proper chemicals which are absorbed into the blood stream and create the environment for prevention of pregnancy.

Birth control patches are changed every week, so instead of needing to remember to take your pill on a daily basis, you just need to change your patch weekly. You can incorporate this into your schedule or just set a notification on your phone to remind you.

When it comes to effective birth control, it doesn’t get much simpler than the birth control patch. It can be placed in a discreet location where it will not be seen and you will not even notice it yourself. Still, you will be getting the hormones needed to prevent you from getting pregnant.

As with other hormonal methods, the patch can cause some side effects such as mood swings, decreased libido and nausea. Your doctor can help you determine if you need to switch formulas.
