Low Estrogen Birth Control: Be Careful!

Probably the simplest solution for those women who are not ready to get pregnant is to take birth control pills. It is a safe and highly effective method of birth control and one that many women prefer, as it does not interfere with their lives.

The pill is a hormonal contraceptive. This means that it delivers hormones into the body that create the right environment for pregnancy prevention, usually be preventing ovulation. In order to keep these hormones at the proper levels, it is essential that the pill be taken every day. Alternatively there are also patches you can wear that absorb the hormones into your skin over the course of a week.

Changing hormone levels in your body can cause a lot of different side effects to occur. Take a look at pregnancy. During pregnancy there are many hormonal changes in a womans body. Now look at how her body reacts. She may be nauseated, have headaches and mood swings. These same things can occur when you take birth control pills.

Fortunately there are many different types of pills you can take. They each contain different levels of hormones of different types. Because different people respond differently to different types, your doctor will determine which one will be best for you to try.

If you start on one and find yourself experiencing problematic side effects your doctor may switch you to a low estrogen birth control pill. Pills with lower levels of hormones may not cause such strong reactions in terms of side effects for those who have experienced problems with higher levels.

It is also important to note the hormone combination. Having too high androgen levels and low estrogen birth control can create a problem for some people. It may cause acne to appear and can also cause hair growth. For some women it is better to have a birth control formula that is higher in estrogen levels.

Low estrogen birth control is recommended for some women. For example, women who are nearing menopause may not need full strength birth control. For these women a lower dosage might be just what is needed and reduce the side effects while still providing the contraception. It will also help to regulate the periods as well as some other benefits.

Taking low dose birth control pills may sound like just the answer to some of the problems you may be having with the dosage you are at now. However, it is important to keep in mind that lower dosage does not necessarily mean reduced side effects. In cases of reduced estrogen, in some women it may trigger hair growth and acne, definitely two things you want to avoid. Make sure your doctor helps you determine which type of birth control pill is right for you.
